1970s Hair Salon Pop Up

Idea:

544 Merrimack St has a vacant first floor retail space that was once Vogue II Hair Salon. All of the equipment is still there. I want to work with the property owners and hair stylist to pull it off! If this idea is chosen but this specific location can’t work, we could identify another vacant [Read more…]

Benefit:

Turning vacant space into a temporary salon.

Leo Roy Roof Conversion

Idea:

Convert the top floor of the garage into a community space. During the summer, offer free movie screenings. Add a dog park, tables, and a games area. Invite food trucks to be on street-level. Convert unused space into turf. DIY Project can be the first phase of this, and we keep building onto it if [Read more…]

Benefit:

The space can still be used for parking on busy days but also serves the community when it is empty most of the year.

Walk of fame

Idea:

I just returned from Saint Louis where they have their own walk of fame. We should recognize all the Lowellians that went on to achieve fame. A quick list includes Olivia Dukakis, Paul Tsongas, Mark Goddard (lost in space), Milton Selzer (hogans heroes) Betty Davis, Jack Kerouac, Michael Chicklus, Michael (?) Ansara, Mickey Ward. I’m [Read more…]

This would show that even starting in humble conditions, anything is possible.

Yuletide Market

Idea:

An idea I think that would thrive in Downtown Lowell is creating a Yuletide Market. The first or second weekend in December, close down Middle Street or another spot in downtown Lowell, with the cute cobblestone roads, and invite all the vendors from Western Ave. Brush Arts etc. and have mulled wine and hot chocolate [Read more…]

Benefit:

Downtown Lowell in the winter is so cute time with all the lights, wreaths, and old brick buildings, I think if this is done right, it could turn into a holiday destination in MA.

Downtown / JAM.

How to Fix Bus Stop Signs

Idea:

I saw this video and thought it would make an interesting and beneficial project for Lowell. LINK to video is here. The video is called “How to Fix Bus Stop Signs: Uytae Lee’s Stories About Here” from CBC-Vancouver on Youtube. The gist of it was zip-tying poster board signs to bus stops, but the signage would include [Read more…]

Benefit:

Shows critical information about where busses are going, which bus to take, and elevate busses as an important mode of transportation.

Outdoor Cinema Wall

Idea:

Paint the side of a building outdoor projector screen paint to create a fixture that can be used by anyone for an outdoor movie night.  In addition, create an outdoor home theater cinema projector that people can enjoy. This could somehow be open for use in theft-proof boxes. This could be borrowed/rented by people over [Read more…]

We are proud to participate in Mass Cultural Council's Card to Culture program in collaboration with the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Department of Public Health's WIC Nutrition Program, the Massachusetts Health Connector, and hundreds of organizations by making cultural programming accessible to those for whom cost is a participation barrier.

Most DIY Lowell annual events are free, but often have a suggested donation. No donation is suggested for EBT, WIC, or ConnectorCare cardholders. See the complete list of participating organizations offering EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare discounts.

This program is supported in part by a grant from MassHumanities; in part by the City of Lowell; and in part by the following Comet-level sponsors:
