Fix-It Fair or Repair Cafe

Idea:

Some libraries operate “fix-it fairs” where community members share their expertise in various areas by fixing things that need repairs. Small engine repair, sewing and other textile repair, computer support, small appliance repair, etc. I believe this sort of thing has been done in Lowell before, but this could be done on a recurring basis [Read more…]

Benefit:

Repairing existing goods is beneficial in many ways. It saves community members money by making their broken items last longer, especially for items that are costly to repair or replace. It provides a place for those with helpful skills to be able to share those skills with others, which strengthens [Read more…]

Graffiti Dike

Idea:

The Centralville side of the Merrimack has a concrete dike along VFW Highway. Lowell artists would render one or more of their existing works at a larger size – the full height of the dike. The art pieces would be spaced such that the local graffiti taggers would have the opportunity to make their own [Read more…]

Benefit:

Art's always a benefit, public art is a community benefit. Legitimizing graffiti art provides the benefit of making the illegal act a legal act.

Nintendo Nights

Idea:

Put together a weekly or monthly series of events where people can bring picnic food (or we invite food trucks and get an alcohol permit for a beer garden if we’re ambitious) and there are one or two projectors set up in a locked case hooked up to old video games. They can eat and [Read more…]

Benefit:

Would help revitalize a park and bring people together. If it was advertised, maybe people would come from out of town to experience this unique Lowell idea.

Merrimack Street Rotating Cultural Exhibit!

Idea:

Work with the Adult Ed center across from the Library to install an outdoor “rotating cultural exhibit.” This would include a couple of structures that could be chained to the fence that would hold items behind plexiglass, frames to be attached to the fence that could hold informational panels, and perhaps some planters for small [Read more…]

Benefit:

This would be a low-cost way to celebrate Lowell’s diversity and create some visual interest and excitement connecting downtown with “Upper Merrimack Street” walking toward UMass Lowell. If the materials are high enough quality and draw a lot of attention, perhaps it would also contribute to interest in redeveloping abandoned [Read more…]

Card to Culture

We are proud to participate in Mass Cultural Council's Card to Culture program in collaboration with the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Department of Public Health's WIC Nutrition Program, the Massachusetts Health Connector, and hundreds of organizations by making cultural programming accessible to those for whom cost is a participation barrier.

Most DIY Lowell annual events are free, but often have a suggested donation. No donation is suggested for EBT, WIC, or ConnectorCare cardholders. See the complete list of participating organizations offering EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare discounts.

Special Thanks

This program is funded in part by a grant from the Lowell Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. We also express our sincere gratitude to our Cornerstone Partners:
