Disposable Camera Project

Idea:

Distribute cameras to people in Lowell and ask them to share their experiences through photography. It could be one group of people, for example children, seniors, unhoused people, or newcomers to Lowell. Or it could be about finding a bunch of different perspectives!

Benefit:

It’s an exercise in empathy and a chance to see the world from different angles. Photos could be displayed in a park on a board under plastic sheeting.

Location:

Citywide.

Bette Davis Celebration

Idea:

Bette Davis was born in Lowell, and we don’t do enough to celebrate her. We should make some art, or have an event, or project clips of her movies on brick walls. Maybe all 3!

Benefit:

We’d all enjoy celebrating a Lowell local, and who doesn’t enjoy a little classic Hollywood glamor?

Location:

Citywide.

1970s Hair Salon Pop Up

Idea:

544 Merrimack St has a vacant first floor retail space that was once Vogue II Hair Salon. All of the equipment is still there. I want to work with the property owners and hair stylist to pull it off! Idea:

Convert the top floor of the garage into a community space. During the summer, offer free movie screenings. Add a dog park, tables, and a games area. Invite food trucks to be on street-level. Convert unused space into turf. DIY Project can be the first phase of this, and we keep building onto it if [Read more…]

Benefit:

The space can still be used for parking on busy days but also serves the community when it is empty most of the year.

Drive in movies

Idea:

This idea would involve identifying a large parking lot or field near a building for a pop-up “drive in” theater. A movie would be projected onto a wall of the building and audio would be broadcast with an FM transmitter. People could park or use lawn chairs. I think its great idea for a drive [Read more…]

Benefit:

It will provide entertainment for communities and small businesses around the areas.

Location:

Don't Know, Lower Highlands, Pawtucketville.

Walking Area

Idea:

Work with the City to create a temporary walking/patio area in downtown Lowell. This could be many areas, possibly on Merrimack St from John to Shattuck Streets no through track, emergency vehicles only. A left only on to Merrimack from John St. there would be access to Kirk St. making a left from Merrimack. This [Read more…]

Benefit:

It would benefit the many businesses in the area. More comfortable outdoor dining for the restaurants and encourage or bring back other merchants such as gift shops, boutiques to that area. There are garages at each cardinal points within walking distance.

We are proud to participate in Mass Cultural Council's Card to Culture program in collaboration with the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Department of Public Health's WIC Nutrition Program, the Massachusetts Health Connector, and hundreds of organizations by making cultural programming accessible to those for whom cost is a participation barrier.

Most DIY Lowell annual events are free, but often have a suggested donation. No donation is suggested for EBT, WIC, or ConnectorCare cardholders. See the complete list of participating organizations offering EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare discounts.

This program is supported in part by a grant from MassHumanities; in part by the City of Lowell; and in part by the following Comet-level sponsors:
